Departmental Scholarships and Awards

Chemistry

Through the generosity of private donors, the Department of Chemistry is able to provide several scholarships and awards each year to undergraduates for outstanding scholastic achievements. An annual Chemistry Department Awards Ceremony is held at the end of the spring semester. A representative list of the various scholarships and awards which are presented at this event are listed below.

Outstanding Achievement in Physical Chemistry

Owen W. Maloney Scholarship - scholarships are awarded to the two top first-year general chemistry students enrolled in the Fall-Spring sequence of CHEM 184 (or 185) and 188 (or 189)

Leonard V. Sorg Scholarships - scholarships are awarded to students completing their first year at the University of Kansas and who are planning careers in the field of chemistry.

Clark E. Bricker Scholarship - (for Freshmen) Scholarship is presented to a student completing his or her second year at the University of Kansas and planning a career in chemistry or a related science. The awardees will be selected on the basis of academic record, ambition, and demonstrated need.

Jacob Kleinberg Award - (for Juniors) An award  presented to an undergraduate major in the Department who has made outstanding progress in chemistry by the end of his or her junior year.

Alpha Chi Sigma Award - An award is made to a graduating senior in either chemistry or chemical engineering for outstanding scholastic achievement through four years of chemistry. The student's name is engraved on a special plaque.

American Institute of Chemists Medal - A national award is presented to a graduating senior who has achieved an outstanding record as a chemistry major.

Fassnacht Scholarship (for Juniors and Seniors)- A scholarship presented to an advanced undergraduate student with a declared major in chemistry. The awardee will be selected on the basis of academic record, commitment to a career in the chemical sciences, and participation in research, teaching and/or service to the Chemistry Department. (This scholarship is not available for Spring graduating seniors).

Owen W. Maloney Scholarship - awarded to an outstanding first year chemistry student

Snyder Scholarship - An award presented to a female junior or senior declared major in chemistry

Ralph E. and Ester Weik Badgley Scholarship - awarded to a female undergraduate student

Arthur W. Davidson, Phi Lambda Upsilon

Ted M. Gardiner Chemistry Award - award based on merit for undergraduate research

Walter Gubar Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship
- awarded to deserving students in Chemistry based on merit and need

Reynold T. Iwamoto Scholarship

Franklin Strain Fellowship - awarded to a Chemistry major based on merit
